On Brownies

We really cover a lot of ground around here. We started with salt ... danced over Girl Scout cookies ... and now have landed on brownies. So let's dish about that for a while. Bev says that the Barefoot Contessa brownies turned out like rocks. Monday is looking for some good recipes. Marian loves the corners. I take an edge but never a corner. And I'll also go ahead and put my vote in the "fudge-like" column versus the "cake-like" column. What else? What else?

i brought a bag of brownies back to athens with me, and they were gone way too soon. i'm sure it's because of mom's cooking method - which is to say, don't cook them, just walk the pan by the oven reeeally slooowly. who doesn't love brownie batter better than the finished product? (if the answer is YOU, something is wrong. you should seek help.)

May I just say that Marian's brownies were the best thing I have ever consumed. I was very upset that Liza ate/fed them all to other people. I was hoping to hoard a few for my self (just a tad greedy here. I did eat half the pan in Augusta) But yes, ooey gooey centers and almost crunchy shell are the best.

Oh, and if you line your pan in parchment paper, it makes getting them out of the pan SO much easier.

Publix has the best chocolate iced brownies. I secretly buy them for myself and savor every bite until they are all gone. It would be a hard decision between those andmy mayonnaise cake. quick some one get mea brownie---the edible kind please.

Well, i could flatter marian with comments like "those brownies were the best edible form of crack I'd ever had" but I will give her this:

thanks to those brownies, I avoided conflict for an entire 24 hours after my (blood) mother ate them.

They shall only be referred to as the "miracle" brownies now. :)

Definitely gooey fudgy, not cakey. And you're all evil. Excuse me while I go find some chocolate!

i see a new commercial: ..."behold....the power of brownies!"

Hmmm excellent plan. When I was little and I had a problem, my mother would jokingly (?) tell me: "what do you want, a fat mother or skinny mother? A skinny mother says 'Go take a run, it'll make you feel better' fat mother says, 'You feel bad? Oh here have a cookie'". That whole flasback to my childhood was all to say: Behold the power of Brownies, is an actual concept in my household.

Or just a whole bunch of rambling to distract me from English class.....

i just read a recipe for "bacon candy" (are you listening, luisa?) all you do is coat bacon in brown sugar and bake it until it's crispy-tender. i really wish i didn't know about this.

That's scary, Marian, and yet...tempting.

Marian...chocolate and bacon! Isn't that insane? That's on the vosges.com website I was telling you all about.

I am so very sorry about the delay. Every day when I see my baking opportunity slipping by because I have to take the vacuum cleaner to the repair shop; or visit a congregant who is in the hospital; or relearn trigonometry to help my high-schooler study for a test; I think of you two and gnash my teeth. I know: excuses, excuses! It WILL happen.

oh no, luisa, i wasn't chastising you! believe me, we have no problem down here feeding ourselves... i was just wondering if you had heard of this delicacy, or better yet could give us your take on its yumminess.

the site i got it from had 11 comments - all were stellar but for one buzz kill who had the audacity to discuss obesity, diabetes, heart disease, early death, etc. i think we all know that bacon candy and its relatives are meant to be eaten sparingly. i mean if we ate everything we wanted everyday, we would all be enormous, and sick!

I think bacon candy falls in to the category of fried twinkies and oreos. Delicious, but deadly

Visit this site to learn the 19 steps to frying oreos. Somebody has to know how to do this right...

A fried Snickers bar is better.
