Kitchen Update #2

reclaiming the wood floorsI'm skipping merrily along in the renovation - dishwasher purchased and installed, old appliances picked up by Habitat for Humanity, remaining cabinet doors removed (thank you, demolition elf!), tile steadily disappearing - and then Marian says, "What about your down draft?"

"My what," I say.

"Your down draft," she repeats.

And then I get that sinking feeling.

Yep, I forgot about the down draft for the cooktop. Not a showstopper. A quick call to the cabinet man so that he can modify the cutout will probably do the trick. But now I have to shop for and purchase yet another appliance. And for what? Ventilation?! And I have to arrange for a hole to be cut in the floor and for a duct to be installed. That's the kind of "progress" I find tedious. Ripping up tile? Love it. Painting? Love it. Ventilating a cooktop? Zzzzzzzzzzz.

Delivery date for the cabinets - September 6 or 7.

Stay tuned.

bought the down draft today. while i don't mind spending money, spending money on something like a down draft pains me. its like putting a new roof on the house - necessary but not at all satisfying.

Confucius say, no need to ventilate what one doesn't cook.

Oy, the hassle we had with our vent.

Greetings from Cleveland! The fam and I just pulled in for our tour of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

What kind of dishwasher did you get?

Confucius say, "Better to ventilate than be ventilated".

Think of the wonderful aromas swirling on your block when Marian comes over to cook. As you step out of your vehicle you are swept up and carried into your house on a wave of curried chicken. It CAN be satisfying!

Sounds nice. Make sure everything is set at Marian's comfort level, though. We want to make sure our cook is a happy cook.

Ok, so in hindsight, perhaps I wasn't 100% accurate or fair. My apologies.

I have recently enjoyed Debbie's fantastic roasted red pepper pizza, been fully involved in the best, if not everbest, batch of potato salad, and relied on her simple-if-not-perfect green salad with champaign dressing.

While the kitchen redux may have been a long time coming, it will certainly be a nice reward and a lovely place for your invited guests to enjoy your passion for food and your heart in your home.

it has been a long time coming, but that house is patient. i'm sure it has witnessed a lot over the past 106 years. can't wait for the unveiling and for all of you to join me in toasting the new heart of my home.
