Miss Mathie's Pumpkin Bread

Today I turn to All About Home Baking (1933) from the Consumer Service Department of the General Foods Corporation. What I like about this cookbook is that it gives us a glimpse into the life of Miss Margaret Mathie, the woman who owned it. I picked up this little gem in a junk shop in Tacoma, Washington. The draw was not so much the book itself but all the other recipes carefully paper clipped to its pages, most of them snipped from product packages. There's one for Harlequin Marshmellow Pie - calling for 24 Curtiss Royal Pastel Marshmellows. Apple Pie with Cheese Apples from a Crisco container. Pizza ("try this authentic Italian recipe") from a Mirro aluminum pizza pan. And, Home Run Smackers - a recipe that calls for one cup of Kellogg's PEP cereal. Throughout the book I found the letters OK in Miss Mathie's spidery script next to the recipes that she had tried and apparently liked. Calumet one-egg cake, busy day cake, regal caramel cake, and coconut tea strips. Since it is October and Halloween is nearly upon us, I'm sharing Miss Mathie's recipe for pumpkin bread ... shown below in her very own handwriting. Enjoy.

I think it's so interesting to see what recipes people collect. I love to read their own personal notes in the margins. Imagine the "sentiment" we're losing by pulling recipes from the internet now.
