How to Be a Better Foodie

how to be a better foodieI've just received an advance copy of How to Be a Better Foodie: A Bulging Little Book for the Truly Epicurious by Sudi Pigott. Look for it on shelves October 18. As I flip through this "bulging little book," I think to myself ... gee, I'm clever ... I have an arsenal of quotes about food ... I've got an eye for design. Okay, I can't get away with using the term "whilst" in conversation, but I could probably come up with something equally high brow. Certainly I could create something like this, I think to myself. And then I'm reminded of a story Marian told me about her days in the art museum. Everytime she strolled by John Q. Public staring at an item in the museum's collection and muttering dismissively, "I could have painted that" ... she would hiss under her breath, "But you didn't." That's what I'm feeling right now. So hats off to you, Sudi Pigott, for an impressive little tome. You clearly have in your cupboard of personal attributes one that I'm missing ... initiative.

Point your browsers to www.betterfoodie.com to get a nibble of Ms. Pigott's latest work.

Initiative? Maybe it's just a different set of priorities.

I suspect that Ms. Pigott doesn't live in a wonderful bungalow with a fabulous new kitchen. She hasn't seen the world and experienced the variety of cultures you have. Nor is she surrounded by the most fantastic family and group of friends who gravitate toward you. She probably doesn't know how to write for others so that "their" words escalate them to prominence. And I bet she couldn't reflect in one simple paragraph words about an experience that would make the reader smile and cry at the same time.

Looking at the link I'm thinking, "sure she's published a book, but you have WAAAAAY better hair, probably better teeth. We all know British food is nothing to write about. And....above all else...your website is much more interesting than hers!"

oh goodie - my very own cult

Hey...we can even call ourselves the Debs - Devotees Encouraging Barshafsky (or Bitegeist).

And then...we can give ourselves secret cult nicknames that are food themed (for Little Debbie?) like "Swiss Cake Roll", "Oatmeal Creme", "Snow Puff", and "Honey Bun"....

I bet Sudi Pigott doesn't have her own cult following. If she read this, she probably wouldn't want one either.

for sure she doesn't because, like, who is she?

and i call Swiss Cake Roll.

wonder who will be Zebra Cake?

and as for your dinner of "bumble bee lemon and pepper seasoned tuna medley with kosher dill petites" i have this to say about that: you have a lovely way of making a pre packaged meal sound almost tasty.
and to issue this disclaimer: since we are trying to get ready for out 3 week jaunt across 2 continents, we have not been dining together. i have been enjoying whatever is leftover in my fridge, and deb is still trying to eat the rest of her pantry.

speaking of eating what ya got-- I haven't been to the club Bi-lo since our trip to EU... for example, I had cous cous and a can of pineapple for dinner... it was as yummy as it sounds:) May I come look into your pantry? I will trade a three year old can of tomato soup (healthy request) and some bamboo shoots for some tuna.. No? ok
